Slidell Mudroom Upgrade: Built-In Bench + Durable Paint Case Study

As a Senior Project Manager at Clark Remodeling, I’ve seen firsthand how a well-designed space can completely change a family's daily life. A recent project in a classic 1970s Slidell neighborhood perfectly illustrates this. The homeowners reached out to us with a common, frustrating problem: their entryway was a zone of chaos. With the rainy season in full swing, their side entrance, which connects to the carport, had become a dumping ground for wet backpacks, muddy shoes, and rain gear. The walls were a mess of scuffs and dirt, and the lack of any organized storage created a bottleneck every time the family came or went. They knew they needed more than just a new coat of paint; they needed a real solution that could withstand the demands of a busy family and Slidell’s humid, rainy climate. This was a challenge our team at Clark Remodeling was excited to tackle.

The Assessment

When I first arrived at the 1970s-era Ranch home, the issue was immediately clear. Like many homes from that period, the layout was practical but lacked the thoughtful details modern families need. The entryway was simply a hallway, not a functional transition space. The wall next to the door bore the battle scars of daily life: black scuff marks from shoes, smudges from wet jackets, and chipped paint near the baseboards. There was a pile of shoes on a flimsy plastic tray that was constantly overflowing, and backpacks were usually dropped on the floor, creating a tripping hazard.

During our consultation, the homeowners expressed their frustration. They felt like they were constantly cleaning the walls, only to have them look dirty again the next day. The core of the problem was twofold:

  1. A Lack of Functional Storage: There was no designated place for anything. This forced items to be piled on the floor or leaned against the walls, causing clutter and damage.
  2. Inadequate Surface Durability: The standard builder-grade paint on the walls and trim simply wasn't up to the task of handling the high traffic and moisture of a primary entryway, especially in our humid climate.

It was clear that a comprehensive solution was needed. We couldn't just address the storage without considering the surfaces, and we couldn't just paint without solving the underlying clutter problem. The Clark Remodeling approach is always to look at the whole picture, and this project required a perfect marriage of custom carpentry and advanced paint technology.

Our Solution

Our plan was to transform this chaotic corridor into a highly functional and durable mudroom space. The project was broken down into two main phases, both handled by our specialized in-house crews to ensure a seamless workflow and the high-quality finish Clark Remodeling is known for.

First, our carpentry team designed a custom mudroom built-in tailored to the family's exact needs. We took precise measurements of the wall and designed a unit that maximized storage without overwhelming the space. The design included:

  • A sturdy mudroom bench Slidell families would find invaluable. It provided a comfortable spot to sit and put on or take off shoes, instantly making the morning rush easier.
  • Open-faced lower shelving beneath the bench, designed to allow wet shoes to air out and dry properly, preventing mold and mildew growth.
  • A tall back panel with individual sections featuring entryway cubbies carpentry at the top. These cubbies were perfect for storing hats, gloves, or small items, giving each family member their own designated spot.
  • Heavy-duty double hooks in each section for hanging backpacks, coats, and umbrellas.

For the construction, we used a high-quality, moisture-resistant composite material for the bench and structure, ensuring it wouldn't warp or swell in Slidell’s humidity. The entire built-in was then sanded smooth and prepped for the painting phase.

Next, our painting crew took over. Proper surface preparation is something we never compromise on at Clark Remodeling. The walls surrounding the new built-in, and the built-in itself, were meticulously prepped. We patched all existing dings and scuffs, sanded the surfaces to create the perfect adhesion profile, and applied a high-adhesion, stain-blocking primer. This step is critical for ensuring the final coat is uniform and long-lasting.

For the finish, we selected the ideal washable paint for mudroom walls. We chose a premium scuff-resistant acrylic enamel in a satin finish. This modern paint formulation is designed specifically for high-traffic areas. It creates a hard, non-porous film that resists dirt, and most importantly, is incredibly easy to clean. A simple wipe with a damp cloth can remove scuffs and smudges without damaging the paint's finish or color. We used the same durable paint for the built-in, creating a beautiful, cohesive, and incredibly tough final product.

The Results

The transformation was completed in just four days, a testament to the efficient, organized workflow of the Clark Remodeling teams. The result was nothing short of stunning. The once-cluttered and scuffed hallway was now a bright, organized, and welcoming mudroom.
